For those who are not avid readers, or avid J.K. Rowling fans beyond the Harry Potter realm, the Cormoran Strike series may be unknown. Published under the pseudonym of Robert
Galbraith, the series follows private investigator Cormoran Strike as he attempts to solve crimes and keep his business afloat.
J.K. Rowling has an unusual problem in that she has created a series in Harry Potter that is almost too popular, and it has caused serious rejection of her other works. "This isn't Harry Potter!" cry angry fans as they throw down their copies of The Casual Vacancy.
Some of this problem was avoided thanks to the use of the pseudonym, but once the true author was revealed people once again lament over J.K. Rowling's failure as an author outside of the masterpiece that is Harry Potter. I present to you an alternate opinion.
The Cormoran Strike series is unique in a crime genre full of typical and predictable. J.K. Rowling presents what we can now expect from her each and every time - full, well-developed, 3-dimensional characters. Cormoran is not your typical dreamy male lead. He is described as having 'pube-like hair' and he's a bit on the overweight side. Robin, his charming secretary, is not your 50's style demure damsel. She gets right in the thick of things alongside her quirky boss.
The characters have flaws. They aren't perfect, and it makes the series fascinating. Highly recommended if you like crime fiction, and want something you won't be able to put down. One added bonus? BBC has just picked up the rights to the series, and will be creating a mini series for your viewing pleasure. Get reading now and you may be able to finish before the series airs!
